Description
The Cavern Course is for divers who are ready to take on an exciting challenge and explore the world of overhead environments. Cavern diving offers spectacular light shows and a unique experience, but it also requires excellent buoyancy control and specialized training.
This course consists of knowledge development, land drills, and four training dives—one outside the cavern and three inside the cavern itself. You will learn vital skills such as handling dive reels, laying lines, and working with emergency procedures, all while navigating through beautiful and unique environments.
Pre-requisites
To enroll in the Cavern Course, participants must meet the following requirements:
- 18 years of age or older
- Minimum PADI Advanced Open Water Diver or equivalent from another training agency
- Completed PADI Diver Medical Questionnaire
What You Will Learn
During this exciting and challenging course, you will master:
Dive Skills and Techniques
- First Dive: Preparation for handling the reel, laying lines, carrying a dive light, hand signals, and emergency procedures.
- Remaining Dives: Cavern dives, staying within the light zone, and no more than 130 feet from the surface.
Advanced Cavern Diving Techniques
- Organization, planning, and techniques of cavern diving, as well as the hazards and risks involved.
- Navigation: Using line protocols, managing depths, and distance limits.
- Handling line entanglement, breakage, disorientation, and other emergencies.
- The usage of specialized equipment such as lights, guidelines, reels, and redundant breathing systems.
- Managing buoyancy, air consumption, and avoiding silting-up during dives.
Equipment Needed
Your basic scuba kit works for the cavern environment, with some modifications. The following specialized equipment is required for this course:
- Primary dive light
- Backup dive light (smaller)
- Line and reel
- Cavern arrows as direction markers
Your PADI Instructor may recommend additional accessories for the course.
Medical Requirements
Before beginning any scuba course, you must review the PADI Diver Medical Questionnaire to ensure you do not require a physician’s clearance.
